The NEW Dirty Dozen for 2011

As you know, I’m a big advocate of eating lots of fruits and vegetables. And a big advocate of eating organic when possible. But I also know that it’s often harder to find organic options, and when you do, they’re often more expensive. This is where knowledge of The Environmental Working Group’s (EWG) Dirty Dozen comes in. These are the 12 fruits and vegetables that were found to be the most contaminated with pesticides. And these are the ones that you should really, really try to purchase pesticide free.
The dirtiest three are:
1. Apples
2. Celery
3. Strawberries
The “cleanest” three (those with the lowest levels of pesticides) are:
1. Onions
2. Corn
3. Pineapple
And the next time you’re at the market and you can’t remember which fruits and veggies are the cleanest and which are the most laden with pesticides, pull out the guide to make your shopping that much easier.

Note: The Family Dinner Book contains the 2010 Dirty Dozen list. This list is the updated version based on EWG’s comparison of the US Department of Agriculture’s study of the pesticide loads on 53 fruits and vegetables.
