Our Favorite Kitchen Tools: The Cast Iron Skillet

The New York Times Food section has a feature running called “Close at Hand” which, as the Times puts it, “celebrates the objects, practical or precious, that cooks find indispensable.”

Those sharing thoughts on their favorite kitchen tool include writers Tracy K. Smith and Bill Buford, illustrator and author Maira Kalman, chef Ignacio Mattos, and cookbook editor Maria Guarnaschelli.

As you may know, one of our favorite kitchen tools is a regular old cast iron skillet. It will be used often, going from the stove to the oven to the table with humble, yet solid grace. In these days where Teflon and its worrying fumes are looming, we can look back to the past for this beautiful replacement. And it is affordable too!

There are many options, but this Lodge Logic Pre-Seasoned Skillet is one of our favorites.
