To Plastic Wrap or Not to Plastic Wrap

I started thinking more about plastic wrap when I began to notice that Kirstin had what I would call, a “plastic problem.” Actually it was more serious than that, it was an addiction, heretofore undiagnosed, to saran wrap, that classic kitchen staple that conveniently covers food but ends up in landfills forever. Plastic doesn’t biodegrade! Every dish ever covered with the stuff going back to its invention around 1957 still exists!

Where was I? Oh, yes, as we were cleaning up after dinner I watched her wrap leftovers, and then to my horror, wrap them again, and again. There had to be another way. After the intervention, we started to come up with alternatives. Tupperware for sure, although we had plenty of bottoms but not as many tops, and glass bowls with plates placed on top as lids would work nicely. We also increased our beloved Ball jar allotment, those jars are great for everything and you have the added bonus of not having to worry about any plastic leaching into the food. Good old glass works great.

    I reuse ziplock bags–these are for some foods just put the entire bowl or plate in.
    Otherwise I re-use glass and plastic containers until they fall apart. Many of these containers come from my workplace. I often get free containers there and I keep things out of the landfill. When these containers are no longer usable, I recycle them.
    I have take re-sealable containers now to my workplace’s cafeteria, thinking about doing the same when I do dine out for leftovers.

    We use the “Wrap-N-Mat” cloth/plastic contraptions with Velcro, to wrap up everything from sandwiches or cold pizza slices to pita chips or apple slices. They can be used many hundreds of times each, they’re easily wiped or washed, and they save us hundreds of little plastic baggies (and many yards of plastic wrap) each year. Best of all, the Wrap-N-Mat unfolds to make its own placemat/crumb catcher, which helps keeps the kids neat while they eat.

    I think I have about nine of these, in various sizes and colors. But I can quit any time! ;-)

  3. We use Pyrex with lids, we have several different types. We do keep plastic wrap on hand, but we use about 1 roll a year.

    I recently watched the movie, bag it, and totally convinced me to avoid using plastic. everybody should watch it.  
    I use flip and tumble reusable produce bags for veggies and fruits, pyrex or glass jars for wet items and grains.

    Abeego covers are amazing. They unfortunately stain easily but they are biodegradable and fit nicely on top of bowls and even wrap sandwiches!
