HuffPost Table Talk: What Makes a Hero?

American flag waving in blue sky

Every week, just in time for dinner, editors at The Huffington Post highlight one of the most compelling news stories of the week — stories that will spark a lively discussion among the whole family.

As the 10th anniversary of September 11th approaches, we remember the tragedy and mourn those who we lost, but we also honor the heroes — firefighters, police officers and brave citizens risked their lives in remarkable ways. Our country will be forever grateful for their courage and strength.

A hero, however, doesn’t have to be someone who steps up in an extraordinary circumstances. He or she can be a peer who calls out a bully, a mentor who spends time helping a child with her homework, the, ahem, parent who packs yummy wholesome snacks for lunch and drives to soccer practice (plus away games) every weekend.

So, for tonight’s family dinner table talk, let’s talk about what it means to be a hero. A few questions to get started:

* Who are your heros? Why?
* What qualities make someone heroic?
* How can you thank someone for being heroic?
* When have you felt most courageous?
* How will you make a difference in someone else’s life this week? This month?
